I use rather a lot of vanilla extract lately, since I hooked into baking. Where I live, in Medan it isn't easy to get a real good quality vanilla extract. Since I was given ( sorry....I asked actually...) a bunch of vanilla pods (Thanks Tanti....), I started googling of how to make vanilla extract. After reading a few, eventually use the long standing Vodka (Smirnoff).
I didn't know it was so simple to make, what we need is time.... I have used some of my homed vanilla extract to make vanilla custard....and yessss....it was good.

Vanilla is a flavoring derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily from the Mexican species, flat-leaved vanilla (V. planifolia). You will need / bahan yang dibutuhkan
300 ml vodka or cooking brandy
4 vanilla pods, split in the middle
4 buah vanili utuh belah tengah
Method / cara membuat
Put the vanilla pods in vodka, close the lid tight and keep in dark, dry and cool place for 3 months....yes 3 months....and voila....you have home made vanilla extract.
Masukkan buah vanili ke dalam vodka, tutup rapat, simpat di tempat gelap, kering dan sejuk selama 3 bulan.....ya 3 bulan...., setelah itu anda sudah bisa menggunakan vanila extrak asli buatan anda....
